Schools Question Time with Solent Youth Action at Toynbee School

This autumn, schools across the country were challenged to produce an edition of Question Time with David Dimbleby for the BBC, and one of our local schools has been chosen along with two others to go through to the regional finals.

Forty six schools nationwide have made it through to the shortlist for Schools Question Time, including Toynbee Secondary School in Chandlers Ford, Eastleigh.

The schools had just two weeks to make a five minute film debating one of the topics they suggested on their application, and invited a member of Solent Youth Action to sit on the Panel to represent young people's views.

Other members of the panel included a school governor and employee of IBM, an Aimhigher education liaison officer and the finance officer for Southampton University.

Lively discussions and debates focussed on what university has to offer to young people, the increase in top up fees and rising youth unemployment.

BBC News article about SYA anti-bullying campaign

BBC News Online published an article about the Anti-Bullying Campaign launched by Solent Youth Action volunteers in the Portsmouth Youth Action Team.

This is a campaign that has been set up by young people for young people to let them know that "you are not alone, enough is enough".

The campaign will be going into schools and fronting anti-bullying week in November across the city of Portsmouth.

SYA volunteer featured on the Community Channel

Solent Youth Action volunteer Nathan Bulloch was followed for a day by the BBC, making a short film for Make a Difference Day 2009 (31st October).

Nathan's achievements in volunteering have been so outstanding that he was picked as one of only five young people from across the country to star in the film after Volunteer England appealed for stories of inspirational young volunteers.

Nathan joined Solent Youth Action in Portsmouth in July 2008. Since then he has been involved in Sports Coaching, Community Events, as part of the Youth Action Team that initiated the Anti-Bullying Campaign and more recently, trained as a Youth Volunteer Leader in London.

SYA at K2

K2 Urban Youth Festival is a vibrant event in the heart of Southampton showcasing Southampton's up and coming musical talents.

There was a number of information stalls and exciting workshops facilitated by young people's services in Southampton so if you wanted to find out about housing or how to get involved in a music group or even how to make a tasty smoothie there were experts at hand to give you this information.

Young people were invited to come along and take part in exciting activities;

Southampton's Big Lunch

Solent Youth Action took part in The Big Lunch, running a Big Lunch event in Southampton in Palmerston Park.

The day was a great success with some fantastic local bands playing including Tzee and African Roots and Imperial Leisure.

There were stilt-walkers throughout the event, a barbeque for our volunteers, face painting and bouncy castles.

Portsmouth's Big Lunch

On Sunday 19th July, Portsmouth vinvolved team held the Big Lunch at Victoria Park. It was part of a national initiative from the Eden Project to get communities together to share friendship, music, food and fun!

The event was organized by the Portsmouth Youth Action Team plus dedicated others who volunteered specifically for the task. Some of these volunteers have now joined the Youth Action Team.

The team met once a week to put the Big Lunch together and catch up on each others progress. The young people decided what entertainment there should be, including which bands would play, plus also chose the food, decorations and directed marketing and advertisement.

The Isle Of Wight YAT team were also a great help supporting the Big Lunch and their efforts were much appreciated

The day itself was a huge success seeing approximately 400 people pass through from 12-6pm. Some people had received flyers through their doors or had seen them in shops. Some had heard the radio show on Express FM that the organizing committee appeared on to promote the event. Others were just passing through and stopped to watch the bands and relax on the picnic blankets and cushions provided, while some were lured in with the promise of a free bouncy castle for the children or the smell of the BBQ food!

YAT teams on the radio

On 27th May 2009 Portsmouth and IOW Youth Action Teams reunited at Express FM to put together a radio show.

They were undecided whether or not to split into their two different groups and do a show each or whether to stay as one big group and put together a show together.

They were also unsure on the topic to talk about. Music, vinvolved, and SYA were amongst the possible topics of discussion.

Within the lunch break, three of the volunteers were given the opportunity to record some of their beatboxing. The whole group turned out in the studio to listen and it was from there we decided we had to stick as one big group and talk about how they got involved with volunteering.

SYA on BBC Radio

On 7th May, Solent Youth Action trustee Helen Moreton and Volunteer Advisor Rosy Butler went to BBC Radio Solent to talk about the J's Film Premiere live on air.

We spoke to Charlie Crocker all about the hard work that volunteers do.

You can listen to the Charlie Crocker show at weekdays 1-4 pm, or online on the BBC iPlayer.

Premiere of J's on Film

The premiere of J's on Film will be taking place on Thursday 7th May at 6pm at Harbour Lights Cinema, Southampton!

It will be an opportunity to watch the eagerly awaited film created by J's Youth Club.

There will be drinks and light refreshments and will be an excellent opportunity to meet the stars of the film themselves!

If would like to attend, please contact Rosy.
