Local MPs Visit Solent Youth Action

Over the past three years, Solent Youth Action and Vinvolved have supported and empowered young people to make a positive contribution to their community, whilst developing valuable leadership and employability skills.

In a time of high youth unemployment, our project has provided vital opportunities to support young people’s personal and social development, harnessing their skills and talents and raising their aspirations.

We believed that is important to make youth volunteering high on government agenda, especially in the current climate. We invited John Denham, Labour MP for Southampton Itchen and Alan Whitehead, Labour MP for Southampton Test along to the Underground Youth Club in St Mary's to let them know what a fantastic job youth volunteers have been doing across Southampton and the positive impact this has had on the wider community.

Learning about Children's Rights

On Wednesday 27th May, volunteers from Solent Youth Action went to London for a day organised by CRAE (Children's Rights Alliance for England).

The event was aimed at inspiring and educating young people on matters regarding children's rights and how to use the voice that young people are entitled to.

The day consisted of informing us on the rights that we have, showing us campaigns that are currently in place, as well as a "Dragons' Den" type panel judging campaigns that we made.

It was a really fun as well as an informative and educational day.

Challenging a local MP

To celebrate Volunteers' Week, youth volunteering organisation v, invited MPs across England to take part in the "vchallenge" and volunteer alongside young people in their local communities.

Portsmouth vinvolved team organised a vchallenge with local MP Mike Hancock. Mr Hancock had listed his interests as Arts 'n' Crafts and Fundraising, so that's what Solent Youth Action did!

The aim of the afternoon was to raise money to buy specialist disability sports equipment for the local Mary Rose School.
