Healthy Towns Healthy Picnic

On Monday 31st May, Solent Youth Action volunteers from the Respect Programme in Portsmouth helped out at the Healthy Towns Healthy Picnic on Southsea Common.

The Picnic was organised to invite families to come along and find out about healthy living whilst promoting sport, physical activities and undertaking a good diet.

There were loads of stalls promoting the healthy themes of the event and the volunteers were involved in encouraging people to join in the fun and games.

Amber, Natalie and Louis dressed up as pieces of fruit and veg and competed in an obstacle race to encourage people to enter a competition to win a free place in the Great South Run.

Operation Smile totals for SYA

V Hampshire, V Portsmouth, V Project, Take Action, The Hilt and Buddies volunteers have been working hard throughout December to design and make as many t-shirts for Operation Smile as they can before Christmas.

After many hours of drawing, cutting and tying, we are proud to say that our volunteers made an amazing 358 t-shirts. So a big well done to everyone that came along to the sessions across the county.

A special mention goes to the Take Action volunteers that made a whopping fifty-five t-shirts, beating all the other projects to be the winner of the most t-shirts made.

Take Action take on Operation Smile

On Thursday 10th December, six Take Action Eastleigh volunteers took part in the Operation Smile project.

The aim of the session was to produce fifty hand decorated T-shirts that could then be used as operation gowns for the young children that were going to have the 45 minute operation to repair clefts.

The operation is done through Operation Smile who provides free facial reconstructive surgery to more than 130,000 children. 50 T-shirts provides one child with the operation.

Operation Smile comes to South Downs College

Students from South Downs College came out in force this week to help out the Operation Smile Christmas appeal with Solent Youth Action.

Operation Smile are asking people to create hospital gowns for children undergoing cleft palette operations in India by cutting up and decorating an old clean t-shirt.

These donated t-shirts will save the charity thousands of pounds, which can be used to fund further operations.

Each gown costs £3 and an operation costs £150, so for every 50 t-shirts made, another free operation can be performed.

Getting together in Portsmouth for Operation Smile

On Wednesday 9th December, Solent Youth Action volunteers from the Respect Programme in Portsmouth met at for a volunteer drop-in at Eastney Community Centre.

The session had many aims: from signing up new young people to the Programme to recruiting for upcoming taster-days, short–term and part-time opportunities.

Within the drop-in we had a workstation for volunteers to work on converting t-shirts into hospital gowns for children benefitting from Operation Smiles work which proved very popular, although not as popular as the free food!

On Sunday 25th October, Solent Youth Action volunteers from Portsmouth went down to the site of the Great South Run to support Macmillan Cancer Care in supporting the hundreds of people running to raise funds for them.

Kitted out in green Macmillan merchandise, banging inflatable bangers and wearing silly wigs, we all had a great day!

Now, we hope to continue supporting Macmillan in their Christmas initiative of gift wrapping peoples bought items for a donation to Macmillan.

We need a small team of friendly, approachable volunteers with present wrapping fingers at the ready to be based at a store in Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth on Thursday evenings throughout December.

Presents for children in hospital

On Tuesday 2nd December and Thursday 4th December, eight volunteers from the Take Action Eastleigh Project worked in a team to buy and wrap presents ready to be given out to children in hospital over Christmas.

We support a local charity called the Sophie Barringer Trust. In doing so, we were able to attend The Giving Tree Assembly at Norwood Primary School in Eastleigh (an idea of Sophie Barringer's, who lost her battle to cancer and used to attend Norwood). Sophie wanted to bring Christmas cheer to local children's hospital wards to brighten patients' days.
