A Cornish tea for Meon Court

It's not every day the residents of Meon Court in Southampton get to enjoy a taste of Devon on their doorstep. So when the Southampton Take Action group suggested supplying a scrumptious afternoon tea, with all the trimmings, they jumped at the chance.

So on Thursday 29th July, a group of four volunteers, aged 13 to 14 years old, gave up their free time to bake fresh scones, guided by Joy, in the kitchen of the youth club. They each worked methodically to produce dozens of perfectly risen scones, fit for a Cornish tea room, before transporting them to Meon Court (which provides supported housing for older people).

Southampton Silver Surfers Week

From 17th May 2010, a group of Take Action volunteers took part in the week-long Silver Surfers Week across Southampton.

It is a national campaign to promote use of digital technologies by older people.

The volunteers helped show the residents how to use a computer, and how it can help them in everyday life.

One resident was hard of hearing and her son lived abroad so talking to him on the telephone was difficult.

Volunteers helped her set up and email account and a face book page so that she could communicate with her son that way.

Kings Worthy Day Centre

On Friday 4th June Solent Youth Action vinvolved volunteers from as far away as Lee-on-Solent, Gosport and Eastleigh came together for a morning of fun at Kings Worthy Day Centre.

The centre provides a place for older people to go to socialize, have lunch and take part in activities from Monday to Friday.

Our group of enthusiastic young people spent their time getting to know the day centre regulars and playing games such as Connect Four, ludo and Guess Who. A few people even gave the Nintendo Wii a go.

Round two at Darwin House

On Thursday 6th May, two vinvolved volunteers returned to Darwin House to continue with gardening work that was desperately needed!

The volunteers returned to continue work for the care home of Darwin House in Portsmouth. A rose bush was cut down and weeds removed. This has made a huge difference to the small plot and the residents are always so pleased with our presence.

We were even rewarded with bacon sandwiches!

Bonnets for Easter

On Thursday 25th March, volunteers from Southampton City College had an Easter Bonnet making competition at the sheltered housing project, at the Golden Grove Estate in St Mary's.

Involved in the competition was the students and the senior Citizens.

Neighborhood Wardens and Housing Officers came along at the end to judge the winner and give out the prizes, and we had four prizes for the best looking bonnets.

The Student volunteers made hot cross buns and tea and coffee.

Animal bingo for Bisley Court

On Thursday 25th February 2010, the Community Action Team from Chamberlayne College for the Arts hosted an afternoon of animal picture bingo for the older residents at Bisley Court, in Weston.

Prizes were donated from Marks and Spencer so all winners got a £10 voucher.

Bringing festive cheer to Weston Court

On 1st December, seven Solent Youth Action volunteers from Chamberlayne College for the Arts put all the Christmas decorations up for the older residents at Weston Court sheltered housing.

They decorated the tree and hung up the lights which was then followed by some carol singing.

Brightening up Meon Court

Take Action volunteers braved the storm on Saturday 14th November to plant spring flowering bulbs in the communal gardens at Meon Court in Southampton. Meon Court is housing with support for older people.

We had two-hundred bulbs and planted them in the grass in front of some of the homes and in the borders at the back of the homes. The soil was very stony so it was hard work for the volunteers.

One resident had her own bulbs to plant and Natasha and Jack planted them for her. She was very pleased and said "it has restored my faith in human nature" as she had just had her electric scooter trashed and her mobility is very limited.

Hearing about the history of Portsmouth

For Make a Difference Day 2009, volunteers from Portsmouth spent some time with older people at Age Concern to share stories of their time in Portsmouth, memories of the City during the war, famous people from Portsmouth, the fashion and technology over the years.

All involved had a great time and proved any preconceptions about the other group wrong.

The young volunteers enjoyed hearing all the stories and the older people really appreciated being taught how to use the laptop and internet to assist the research.

Supporting Age Concern

As part of Make A Difference Day, Take Action volunteers took part in an intergenerational project at Age Concern, Southampton.

They shopped for gifts that they felt the older generation would like and filled up reusable shopping bags with these items.

They then donated all twenty of these bags to Age Concern in Southampton to be distributed amongst the people that they work with.
