Bonnets for Easter

On Thursday 25th March, volunteers from Southampton City College had an Easter Bonnet making competition at the sheltered housing project, at the Golden Grove Estate in St Mary's.

Involved in the competition was the students and the senior Citizens.

Neighborhood Wardens and Housing Officers came along at the end to judge the winner and give out the prizes, and we had four prizes for the best looking bonnets.

The Student volunteers made hot cross buns and tea and coffee.

Helping the elderly with visual impairments

Take Action Eastleigh Volunteers played host at a social session for the local charity Open Sight during the October half-term.

The team helped to serve refreshments to the members with sight impairments.

Two of the volunteers also shared their musical talents by playing pieces of music to the group, one on their flute with the other playing their clarinet.

The volunteers also took a donation of raffle prizes on behalf of SYA and helped to sell the tickets.

Recycling in St Mary's

A recycling project was started in September 2009, with a group of volunteers St Mary's with learning difficulties.

Consultation was carried out with this group to see the type of project they felt would benefit the community. They came up with the idea of a recycling project. We then decided it would be beneficial to team up with the neighbourhood wardens.

Sharlien Kennedy worked closely with the students' tutor who then sent out emails to various organisations and other staff members within the college asking for any unwanted items e.g. clothing, foot wear and textiles. Then the neighbourhood wardens arranged for someone to come out and give a chat about recycling and the health and safety issues.

SYA volunteer featured on the Community Channel

Solent Youth Action volunteer Nathan Bulloch was followed for a day by the BBC, making a short film for Make a Difference Day 2009 (31st October).

Nathan's achievements in volunteering have been so outstanding that he was picked as one of only five young people from across the country to star in the film after Volunteer England appealed for stories of inspirational young volunteers.

Nathan joined Solent Youth Action in Portsmouth in July 2008. Since then he has been involved in Sports Coaching, Community Events, as part of the Youth Action Team that initiated the Anti-Bullying Campaign and more recently, trained as a Youth Volunteer Leader in London.

Mary Rose School Sponsored Walk

On Friday 25th September, three volunteers from around Portsmouth came to support the sponsored walk at the Mary Rose School.

The whole school was involved in the really wild themed walk.

Everyone was given a max of two hours to walk as many laps of the school as possible.

Our volunteers assisted the wheel chair users.

The morning was great fun with many people putting in a great effort in both the walking and the dressing up!

Supporting Mary Rose School's Sports Day

The Annual Mary Rose School Sports Day took place last month and eight Solent Youth Action volunteers supported the young people with their specialist sporting events.

We couldn't have picked a better day for the sports day as there was beautiful sunshine in Portsmouth.

The whole of the Mary Rose School turned out on the St. James's Cricket field all ready to compete for their teams.

The young people were divided into groups depending on their additional needs and all had different sections where they competed. Our volunteers were placed with the more abled of the young people. We were supervising activities such as the javelin and cone flipping. We were all also involved in team races!

Supporting Fratton Live at Home

Solent Youth Action volunteers from Portsmouth spent an afternoon with older people at Fratton Community Centre playing New Age Kurling and taking part in a quiz.

The charity, Fratton Live at Home put on the events to support older people in the Community to engage and socialize with others as well as remain fit and healthy.

The young volunteers formed their own team named "The Young Ones" and participated against the other three teams as well as assisting running the game by prompting teams whose turn it was, scoring the points and keeping record.
