Solent Youth Action empowers young people to develop as individuals, enjoy new challenges and make a positive contribution to the community through volunteering.

Bonnets for Easter

On Thursday 25th March, volunteers from Southampton City College had an Easter Bonnet making competition at the sheltered housing project, at the Golden Grove Estate in St Mary's.

Involved in the competition was the students and the senior Citizens.

Neighborhood Wardens and Housing Officers came along at the end to judge the winner and give out the prizes, and we had four prizes for the best looking bonnets.

The Student volunteers made hot cross buns and tea and coffee.

Take Action at the opening of Adizone

Volunteers from the Take Action group took part in the opening of Adizone, an outdoor gym in Mansel Park, Millbrook.

They joined onlookers as Craig David opened the event with a taster of his new track before trying out the outdoor gym equipment.

As well as a treadmill, exercise bikes, cross trainers and weight equipment; the park now has a basketball and tennis courts and an area for dance and aerobics.

Take Action for Sport Relief

As part of Sport Relief, volunteers from Take Action Eastleigh completed their own three miles to help to raise money.

Despite the wind and rain (and the mud!) all of the volunteers turned up with smiles on their faces ready to run in their shorts and t-shirts.

The enthusiasm and good spirit everyone brought to the day helped make the distance seem easy!

Everybody completed the 3 miles successfully, with some even running an extra mile afterwards.

Robotic dance off for Buddies

Children at the Buddies After School Clubs had a Robotic themed session with activities ranging from junk model robot making to a robotic dance off.

There were prizes awarded to the best robot dancer and the best junk model robot entry.

The children made some great robots and here is a selection of some of the best.

Sport Relief ‘Hoopathon'

March saw Vinvolved volunteers taking part in an unusual fund raising task in aid of Sport Relief.

Along with 243 other people in a muddy Hoglands Park, we attempted to "hoola hoop" our way into the World Record books.

The record attempted was for 1000 people across the country to hoola hoop for two minutes at the same time.

Despite a good half hour practice before hand in our Sport Relief t-shirts with our giant red hoops, none of us could quite manage the 2 minutes

(I was out within 50 seconds, and recovering for another 5 minutes).

One volunteer, Tom, did manage to almost make it, but the pressure (and gravity) got the better of him and he was out 15 seconds before the end.

Muddy (from dropping the hoops so many times) and tired (from picking the hoops up so many times), with our free hoops, crisps and t shirts in hand, we all agreed that laughing at ourselves and each other was far more enjoyable than our typical Sunday lie-ins.

Money raised: £100, which will go towards helping people living incredibly tough lives both at home in the UK and across the world's poorest countries.

Mile Ready for Sport Relief!

In our most popular taster day yet, V Hampshire volunteers gave up their Sunday to join us at Staunton Country Park in Havant to marshal the Sport Relief Mile.

Once we had donned our reflective jackets and set up our two way radios we really looked the part. All the volunteers were then positioned at different points along the one mile course to point runners in the right direction and give them some good old fashioned encouragement, including shouting, whooping and clapping!

When the runners eventually crossed the finish line after their one, three or six mile run, we were on hand to award them with their medals, goodie bags and a well needed bottle of water.

All the volunteers were fantastic and with their hard work the mile was able to take place, helping efforts to raise money for worthy causes across the UK and in the world’s poorest countries.

Animal bingo for Bisley Court

On Thursday 25th February 2010, the Community Action Team from Chamberlayne College for the Arts hosted an afternoon of animal picture bingo for the older residents at Bisley Court, in Weston.

Prizes were donated from Marks and Spencer so all winners got a £10 voucher.

Helping the horses at Packridge Farm

The weather outside was windy and raining but being a horse lover is not just a fair-weather hobby as four young volunteers from Southampton found out.

The school girls from Oasis Academy, Lordshill spent a wet afternoon on 23rd Feb learning the skills of looking after horses and ponies at Packridge Farm in Southampton.

Accompanied by their little assistants aged 4 and 5, the girls were shown how to groom Mary Poppins, a show pony, before having to remove the mud from her hooves. Usually a bright white colour, Mary patiently stood still and allowed the girls to spruce up her winter coat as all the other horses looked on.
